Cultivate KC

For more than a year, Travois has donated our prominent billboard space to local nonprofits for six-month leases. (See past boards here). We want to help local nonprofits spread the word about the good work they are doing without having to pay for costly advertising space. A new design was installed Monday, and we are excited to support Cultivate KC.

Cultivate KC, a catalyst for the production and consumption of locally grown food in Kansas City neighborhoods, is promoting its cause and its upcoming Urban Grown Farms & Gardens Tour, which will be held in June.

Cultivate KC was founded in 2005 and strives to grow food, farms and communities for a healthy local food system. The nonprofit organization believes locally grown food creates healthy lives, a strong local economy, and a more sustainable future. Cultivate KC owns and operates two farms and offers training and education on farming. Individuals who are interested in starting their own farms (to grow and sell) can receive one-on-one assistance on all aspects of farming: finding land, growing crops, selling crops, budgeting and more.  They also offer workshops on various topics ranging from water access to wholesale selling to starting your own transplants.

This summer, Cultivate KC will host is fifth biennial Urban Grown Farms & Gardens Tour. Activities begin Saturday, June 15, with hands-on learning experiences, music, and fresh, healthy, local food. The self-guided farm and garden tour is Saturday, June 22 through Sunday, June 23. Sixty local growers will open their farms and gardens to share their work growing good food and building community in city neighborhoods. Learn more about the tour here.

Are you interested in starting a farm or garden in your community to produce your own food? Cultivate KC is happy to help answer questions or be a resource for people who live outside the Kansas City area.
