Is there such a thing as too much training?

Crystal Banks-Mann

Everyone from occupancy specialists to executive directors and tribal leaders struggle with deciding how often to attend training and which training will be most beneficial. This can be a difficult decision to make, taking time and consideration, ultimately leading to trainings being pushed aside for more pressing matters. This in turn results in staff being unaware of changes that occur within the programs, maintenance and occupancy issues, and sometimes even non-compliance with the state or Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) investors from a simple lack of knowledge.

Travois, in cooperation with the National American Indian Housing Council (NAIHC), has developed an intensive, three-day training course that covers everything from policies and procedures to occupancy and even maintenance procedures for two of the most commonly used sources of funding for housing projects in Indian Country: Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act (NAHASDA) funds and Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) funds.

The NAHASDA and Tax Credit Compliance Professional (NTCCP) course has much to offer to both new employees and seasoned veterans of your housing team by providing core knowledge of both programs along with updates that have occurred in the low income housing industry. The course also offers a comprehensive exam at the end of the class that allows participants to obtain a nationally recognized certification — the NAHASDA and Tax Credit Certified Professional (NTCCP). In most cases, at least one member of the on-site staff is required to obtain a national certification in order to satisfy the requirements from the state monitoring agency and/or the investor.

If your organization is struggling to decide which training will be the most efficient use of your time and resources, we invite you to check out the NAHASDA and Tax Credit Compliance Professional course on the NAIHC website. The training will be held December 9-11 at the Planet Hollywood Resort in Las Vegas. The hotel cutoff date is Friday, Nov. 14. Find more information and registration information here.

I am one of the instructors of the course, and I’ll be joined by LindaLee Retka, the training and technical assistance program director with NAIHC. We look forward to seeing you all there!
