A visit to the “land above the bridge”

Beautiful! I had never been to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan before, and I finally got my chance recently. Sault Ste. Marie is located where three of the Great Lakes come together: Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

When I was a kid, my parents came this way to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary, and it has been their all-time favorite vacation destination ever since. It’s probably a good thing they didn’t go in the middle of winter, like I did. One night while I was there, the temperature got down to 15 degrees below zero with Arctic air coming off the lake. Frigid.

The next day, however, the sun came out, and the fresh snow was still in the trees. It was so peaceful and wild — I can see why my parents wanted so badly to visit.

We are preparing a tax credit application for a new elderly complex, which I am really excited about. I met with some of the staff from the Sault Tribe Housing Authority to hear their ideas and go by the site. We’ve met some wonderful people, and I’m looking forward to seeing this great project come together!
