Compliance Corner: New form needed to comply with VAWA

In 2016, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, (HUD) fully implemented the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013 (VAWA). This act prohibits housing providers from denying or terminating housing assistance to victims of domestic violence.

This applies to all people, not just women, and includes dating violence, sexual assault and stalking.

In 2008, HUD began requiring all HUD properties to follow the VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) policies set forth in its ruling.

For several years, projects developed through the Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program have been required to implement this rule; however, it has been an option for LIHTC projects to utilize a lease addendum specifically for this policy. Recently, a few states have been requiring all LIHTC projects to have this lease addendum in all initial move-in files.

Travois Asset Management & Compliance would like to be ahead of the curve in all compliance related issues.

Therefore, effective July 1, 2017, we will be requiring all our clients’ projects, regardless of the state, to have this lease addendum in all initial move-in files. In addition, for current households, please complete this lease addendum and add it to their files during the recertification process.

Please advise your occupancy staff to add this to their forms required during both the qualification and recertification processes. You can find a copy of this form on our website here.
