I am excited to share the good news that Yavapai-Apache Nation Tribal Housing (YANTH), the tribally designated housing entity of the Yavapai-Apache Nation, recently received an allocation of Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTCs) from the Arizona Department of Housing (ADOH) to construct 35 new units, a community building and a public park on the Yavapai-Apache Nation in Camp Verde, AZ.
The project, Yavapai-Apache Homes #6, will include a mix of triplexes, duplexes and single-family detached homes: 30 three-bedroom units, three four-bedroom units, and two two-bedroom units. The project is located in the Tunlii subdivision and will be the final phase of construction in that community.
Over the span of almost a decade, YANTH has been extremely successful leveraging the LIHTC program to build the community in the Tunlii subdivision. The housing department’s third LIHTC project included a community service facility in Tunlii that houses YANTH’s offices and includes space for community meetings. Yavapai-Apache Homes #4 constructed 22 units and a playground in Tunlii. Yavapai-Apache Homes #5 is currently under construction and will add 38 new housing units and a large community center in Tunlii. The photo above shows construction progress on its fifth project.
In this new project, all of the 35 units will have central air conditioning, in-unit washer and dryer appliances, patio/balconies, water efficient distribution systems, high performance windows and solar panels. The solar panels will offer residents at least a 60 percent reduction in utility expenses. All of these features will increase the efficiency and durability of the homes, ensuring that tribal families will be able to live in and enjoy these homes for many years.
The new community building will create a space for essential supportive services like after-school educational assistance, job training, nutrition classes and financial literacy classes. The new public park will offer residents access to green space, a fitness trail and picnic space.
This project brings YANTH another step closer to alleviating the dire housing crisis that exists on the Yavapai-Apache Nation. With LIHTCs, YANTH has succeeded in providing the lowest-income residents with new, stunning homes that reduce residents’ housing expenses through energy-efficiency features.
