Introducing Travois Design consultant Shani, our intern architect

Our Travois Design team has been creating some incredible building designs — community centers, a housing authority office, a rehabbed business facility and a government services center are all in the works —  in addition to several housing developments.

Shani King, who helped Travois previously as an intern, is returning as a consultant and intern architect to help our team and our clients. Shani recently graduated from the University of Arkansas with a bachelor’s degree in architecture.

Q: What are some of your strengths and how do you use them in your position?

A: I think determination and drive would have to be my biggest strengths. I’m dedicated to getting the job done and doing it right.

Q: What do you find most rewarding about working in your position?

A: Being part of a team that helps to realize clients’ needs and desires, while being fully dedicated to the importance of Place, People and Culture.

Q: What inspires you?

A: Not being mediocre. I’m firmly against settling for things being just okay or average, so wanting more and better makes me want to do more and be better.

Q: Who has the most influence in your life?

A: My Family as whole. I come from a family of artists and designers, and builders, so growing up attention to detail and finding beauty and interest the things around us and how they get to be there is something I have always been exposed to. It has had a major impact on how I got into Architecture and why I am so intrigued by design and construction.

Q: If someone were to make a movie about your life, who would play you and why?

A: Currently, I would say Letitia Wright. She’s petite and a mix of a little introverted and a little sass. It also helps that she is a Caribbean girl too.

Fill in the blank:

On weekends, you’ll find me: Painting, or at an art-related event.

My favorite place I’ve traveled was: Lisbon, Portugal. While it was a short weekend trip, it was the one place in Europe that felt most like home.

The best gift I ever received was: A secret Santa gift. I am a huge Audrey Hepburn fan, and while on study abroad in Italy, someone got me a series of postcards from “When in Rome” addressed to me and with the movie quote to match the image on each postcard.

I love Kansas City because: I’m from a small island (Barbados), and big cities aren’t really my thing. Kansas City is a comfortable blend of the cozy feel of a small town, with a little more activity to choose from.

I’d love to meet: Michelle Obama – she is truly an unstoppable force (and kind of what I think my mom would be like if she had been FLOTUS).

My movie is: “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”

A perfect day for me: Involves Mexican food and doing as little as possible.

My first car was a: Toyota Celica (still is). Her name is CeCe.

My best and worst habits are: Probably one and the same. Perfectionist. I’m very particular about what I want and how I want it, which is great for having things done right, as long as I don’t get caught up in it too much.
