Michael Bland is the CDE manager for Travois New Markets and has been with the company for three years. In his position, he is responsible for managing all Travois New Markets’ deals after the closing process. Michael is surrounded by family at the office – his wife, brother, cousins and aunt and uncle. He answered a few questions about himself below.
What attracted you to Travois? The mission and the laid-back, friendly work environment
What education have you received? Bachelor of Arts from the University of Virginia and Master of Arts from the University of Texas
How do your past experiences help you in your current position? I previously worked in a large government bureaucracy, so I am comfortable with the compliance and reporting requirements.
What places in Indian Country have you enjoyed visiting and why? New Mexico is my favorite. It is such a beautiful place. The food might be the best in the U.S. (I’m a green chili guy.)
What is one thing you would like Travois staff and clients to know about you? The greatest power forward in NBA history, Tim Duncan, once ate dinner at my house and played video games with my brother and me.
What is one of your favorite housing or economic development projects that you have worked on and why? Coastal Villages Regional Fund salmon processing plant in Platinum, AK: The project has created so many positive developments for the community, Alaska Native youth and area fishermen. I always enjoy visiting the project and seeing all the fish being filleted, and the roe being harvested.
What did you want to be as a kid? First a dog, then a doctor
Do you have a hidden talent? I make great hamburgers and pancakes.
Many Travois staff members are animal lovers. Do you have a pet? Have you ever brought your pet to the office? I have two dogs: Lupe and Reggie. I bring Lupe in sometimes, but never Reggie – he’s rude.
What is your favorite meal? What is your favorite local restaurant? My wife’s Thai beef salad is my favorite meal, and my favorite local restaurant is Los Alamos.
If you were stranded on a deserted island and could take one item with you, what would it be? Does family count as an item? If not, then my stereo.

What is your favorite thing to do in Kansas City? Royals baseball
What do you like about Kansas City? What do you dislike? Nice neighborhoods and nice people. I dislike the hot summers.
What kind of music do you like? I enjoy all music, but I really enjoy jazz electronic music and reggae. My favorite band is Boards of Canada.
What is your favorite TV show of all time? The Wire Favorite movie? The Godfather
