Join us Friday, March 1, from 6-8 p.m. for Travois First Fridays featuring “Below The Surface” by Holly Wilson (Delaware Nation/Cherokee)! Holly will give an artist talk at 6:30 p.m. to discuss her work and the exhibition, which will feature photography and sculptures.
Holly (pictured above) has been exhibiting intimate bronzes, photography, and encaustic relief paintings nationally and internationally since the early 1990s. Holly’s work was recently on view at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art’s exhibition, “Art for a New Understanding: Native Voices 1950s to Now.” I was thrilled to attend the directors opening with Holly and several of our Travois First Friday jurors at Crystal Bridges last fall.
Holly’s work reaches a broad audience allowing the viewer the opportunity to see their personal connection. She works in a variety of media including bronzes, encaustic, photography, glass and clay.
Holly attended college locally, graduating from the Kansas City Art Institute with a B.F.A. in Ceramics. She continued her education at Stephen F. Austin State University, Texas, and earned a Master of Arts in Ceramics in 1994 and a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture in 2001. Now, Holly lives and works in Mustang, OK.
Holly described her work in her artist statement: “Narrative is central to my work. I am interested in stories — the stories of my parents, my ancestors, my family, my community. I am a storyteller; through my work, I weave together the threads of these various narratives to create a tapestry that tells stories that are sacred and precious, personal and universal, powerful and at times volatile. Telling them brings to life things sometimes kept secret, hidden, and not permitted to be said because they challenge the status quo or reveal realities that neither side wants said.”
We are excited to host Holly in Kansas City! Learn more about Holly on her website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.
