Conference sessions that spark action

Have you seen our 2018 Travois Conference session lineup? We’re confident our two-day training will send you home with the knowledge, positivity, determination (and the best team around!) to build your community using the Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) and New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) programs. I’ll walk through our agenda and highlight a few sessions below. A full agenda and session descriptions can be found here.

On Tuesday morning, we will begin our instruction by providing (lots of coffee!) an introduction to the LIHTC program with a specific focus on understanding the financial considerations and compliance requirements. We’ll later build on that instruction: we’ll discuss specifics like housing needs and creating mock-ups of home designs, and we’ll hear from experienced tribal developers and talk compliance.

Check out a few of the first-day sessions:

  • First Things First: Assessing Housing Needs
You’d like to take advantage of funding mechanisms like the LIHTC program, but where do you begin? Our panelists will tell you how they determined their community housing needs and transformed those needs into reality.
  • Successful Tribal Developers: Where Are They Now?
We will check in on the progress of LIHTC developments with the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and Yavapai-Apache Nation Tribal Housing. Has construction gone smoothly? How are the residents enjoying their new homes? Find out the answers to these questions and more during this hour with two power developers.
  • How to Succeed in Asset Management & Compliance
We’ll discuss asset management and compliance best practices, construction, 8609s, final pays and everything in between. We’ll also talk about important action items to keep your development running smoothly from start to finish and even after it reaches year 15.

We’ve planned out time at the end of each day for small-group sessions to talk about specific needs in your community. Have your list of questions ready and bring home answers to your housing and economic development teams.

On day two, (after we’ve had our breakfast!) we’ll start by covering the essential components of NMTC developments and discuss what to keep in mind regarding location, eligibility, investor requirements and more. As we did the first day, we will advance this instruction by discussing recent NMTC developments with clients and industry partners.

New this year, we’ve included talks on Sustainable, Responsible, Impact (SRI) investing with a focus on bringing financial resources to Indian Country for new economic, housing and community development.

Here are a few highlights for day two:

  • NMTC Development Case Study with Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma
We’ll talk through the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma’s Durant Wellness Center, a recent economic development project — steps that were taken, the hurdles the tribe overcame, and the benefits of using NMTC.
  • Dialogue with Susan S. White: The Power of SRI for Indian Country
We will facilitate a conversation between the audience and Susan S. White, the director of the Oneida Trust Enrollment Department at the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, about Sustainable Responsible Impact (SRI) Investing.
  • Designing & Financing for Healthcare Needs
We have partnered with an industry leader in healthcare design to provide services through our architectural department, Travois Design. We’ll discuss this new initiative and how combining the design and construction component with Travois knowledge of financing leads to turn-key opportunities for healthcare facility development.
