A few weeks back, Standing Rock Housing Authority staff members attended the South Dakota Tribal Relations Day at the South Dakota State Capitol in Pierre. The SRHA staff has developed more Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) projects than any other tribal housing authority in the country — 17 total in two states: North and South Dakota!
Standing Rock Housing Authority (SRHA) participated in the South Dakota Tribal Housing Forum that was part of the event. Elisabeth Hertel, Martina Miller and Theresa Talley managed the booth representing SRHA. The booth featured displays and handouts that discussed the current housing needs on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation and SRHA’s successful use of the LIHTC program and showed photos of several homes that were built or rehabbed using the LIHTC program.
SRHA also provided comments during the Tribal Listening Session related to changes that need to be made to South Dakota Housing Development Agency’s current Qualified Allocation Plan (QAP) in order to ensure that the QAP will allow tribal projects to successfully compete for tax credits.
The SRHA staff has done a wonderful job creating relationships with the two states that they work in and advocating for changes that will benefit tribal projects.
