Book your trip: I’ll see you in San Diego!

Hard Rock Hotel San Diego

Whenever I travel, I always write out a to-do list. I thought I’d give you a jump-start and start your list for our 14th Annual Affordable Housing & Economic Development Conference.

1. Register
This year we are offering free registration to employees of TDHEs, tribes, Alaska Native groups, Native Hawaiian organizations and Native-owned businesses!
b. Since registration is free, our seats are going quickly. This is why registering is step number one!

2. Book your hotel room and reserve your flight
A block of rooms has been reserved for conference attendees at the Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego’s famous Gaslamp Quarter. Call 866-751-ROCK (7625) and mention “Travois” to receive the discounted room rate of $195 for single and double occupancy. For online reservations use the group code “141114THAN” under “advanced search options” on the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego’s website. Click here for a quick link to the discount page.
b. Check out photos of the hotel here. This place is cool!
c. Our host hotel is just a short 15-minute cab ride from San Diego International Airport.

3. Follow us on social media
We have some awesome social giveaways planned for conference attendees! You have a chance to win spending money and a new iPad!

4. Read up on Matika Wilbur, our keynote presenter.
Matika (Swinomish and Tulalip Tribes) is a photographer and social documentarian. She has visited 171 (and counting) tribal nations, photographing exquisite portraits and collecting extraordinary stories for Project 562, a national documentary project dedicated to capturing contemporary Native America.

5. Write out questions you have about housing development, economic development, asset management, design, construction monitoring, etc.
The conference offers the perfect opportunity to speak with our knowledgeable staff members and to network with experienced tribal developers.
b. We will leave time for questions after many of the sessions. Ask your question then and find out if anyone in the crowd has a similar situation. Learn from our veteran developers!

6. Pack your bag!
Don’t forget your sunglasses!

  1. The Travois conferences are always awesome to attend as there are so many great and informative training sessions. The Red Lake Housing likes to send at least 4-6 staff to the conference, however with the conference being held in San Diego, we are only able to send 2 staff. The airfare costs and hotel costs are so very expensive for this particular venue. The entire travel is going to cost over $3,500.00 just for two staff to attend. I am hoping that the next years conference will be held at a venue that is not so high rate and costly. We like to have as many staff attend your wonderful conference and we hope we will be able to send more to the next years conference. I always gain useful knowledge and love all the networking opportunities. Thank you, Linda

    • Hi, Linda! Thank you for the comment! We are so glad that two Red Lake staff members are able to attend and wish there could have been more as well. We understand the difficulties with travel budgets and the expense of hotel stays, and we hoped that waiving registration fees would make things easier this year. We also rotate the conference location to visit different regions, so travel expenses are more manageable for the tribes that live in that region. We’ll look into heading back to Minnesota or the Upper Midwest for a future conference and hope to have lots of Red Lake folks there. We’ve had a wonderful time and great hospitality at our previous Minnesota conferences. Thank you for your support and past attendance (and sharing your experiences with other attendees too!).
