Every year during the holiday season, our team here at Travois participates in an adopt-a-family program and purchases a family’s entire wish list of Christmas gifts.
As Travois has grown as a company over the years, so has our gift-giving spirit. The story of how we chose two families to adopt this year dates back to 2016.
Adam Rose and our housing development team helped the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation apply for Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTCs) for the nation’s third LIHTC development. It not only won an allocation of LIHTCs; it also won a grant of $500,000 through the Federal Home Loan Bank’s Affordable Housing Program (AHP).
Every development we are fortunate to help with is special to us; however, we often do not have the chance to be so close in proximity. Our Travois headquarters is located in the heart of Kansas City, MO, and is only about an hour and a half drive from the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.
This is by far, the closest project we have had the chance to be a part of, which is one of the reasons why Adam thought it would be a great opportunity to partner with Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation for this holiday.
Adam has coordinated the Travois gift giving every season and brought up the idea of adopting a family from Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. Everyone was excited to help and agreed we would like to add another family to the list.
Both of Travois’ adopted families consisted of a single mother and her three children. Each family member wrote up their own wish list, and Travois employees were able to choose which gifts they would like to purchase. Once the gifts were wrapped at our annual wrapping party, we loaded up all of the gifts and made the drive to Mayetta to deliver them. We were welcomed by the wonderful Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Health Center staff who helped unload all of the gifts and get them to the families.
All of us here at Travois look forward to this gift-giving tradition every year and appreciate the opportunity to give our adopted families a nice holiday season!
