Is the NTCCP Certification right for me?

Together with the National American Indian Housing Council (NAIHC), we developed the NAHASDA & Tax Credit Compliance Professional (NTCCP) certification to provide tribal housing professionals with an overview of the federal Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program and how the program can complement other tribal housing initiatives.

We provide trainings throughout the year through NAIHC’s Leadership Institute. To help you determine if this is the right course for you, we asked Crystal Banks-Mann, assistant director of asset management and a course instructor, to tell us more about the 3-day course, certificate qualifications, her teaching style and more. Read on for details.

When is your next training? Tuesday, July 24-Thursday, July 26

What’s special about the July training’s location? We will host the training in Kansas City, Travois’ hometown! We love Kansas City and enjoy when we can share our city with others.

Who should attend? This course is designed for occupancy specialists, resident services staff and compliance professionals, but we welcome finance officers, executive directors, board members and tribal council members. Anyone who wants to learn more about the compliance side of LIHTC and NAHASDA!

What does the course cover? The intensive course includes instruction on affordable housing laws and guidelines. We learn terms, rules and regulations associated with both the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act (NAHASDA) and Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) programs, and we talk about how the two programs work together. We walk through mathematic formulas to determine eligibility and monthly rent, and we discuss real-life situations, problems and solutions.

What are the steps to receive the NTCCP certification? After passing the exam with a score of 70% or higher, to receive the NTCCP certificate, attendees must also:

  • demonstrate a minimum of 2 years’ experience in NAHASDA-LIHTC-related projects;
  • complete the Certification of Work Experience; and
  • execute the NTCCP Code of Professional Responsibility.

How does this certification help my career? The NTCCP certification is a unique national certification that acknowledges expertise in both NAHASDA and LIHTC programs, with a specific focus on Indian housing.

What is your teaching style? In a word: FUN! It’s very important to me that each student is successful. If we need to go over multiple examples, we will. I make sure everyone understands the material and is prepared for the exam. I also like to laugh and keep the class comfortable, and we take plenty of breaks!

Why do you enjoy teaching this course? I enjoy helping housing staff advance their careers and help the organizations they work for with this important training. Housing is so vital to our communities and understanding how different programs work will help us all be successful. It also gives me a chance to meet new housing professionals and catch up with our seasoned veterans!

You can find more information about the training, a course schedule and details on the hotel room block on our website. Register today through NAIHC’s website!

The Uniform Physical Condition Standards (UPCS) training will be held concurrently, led by Mike Price, director of asset management and compliance. Registration is now open!
